Chimborazo details

AGUAS CALIENTES – CHIMBORAZO REFUGIO Distance:23,7 km Alltitude difference: 920 m Max. Alltitude: 4840 m Duration: around 6 hours Start: Aguas Calientes (see other tours!) Stamina: 100 % Technic: 10 % Need acclimation! Bike and Hike possible This tour demands a good stamina you will ascend to 4850 m and nice weather is recommended because it might get very cold at the 4850 m. You start at the Aguas Calientes where you stayed the last night or where a “camioneta” (pick-up taxi) brought you. You follow the street which goes to the Panamericana and passes Rio Colorado. After a few meters with nice weather you might be able to see the peak of the Chimborazo, the highest mountain of Ecuador. When you reach the crossroad you turn to the right in direction of Guaranda. You stay at the big road until the “Cruz Arenal” where you turn to the left to Riobamba. Another 11 km and you reach the entrance of the Chimborazo National Park where you have to pay the entrance fee (prices changing). There is a crushed stone road which leads to the two refugios. By bike you can only reach the first Refugio Carrel. If you like you can hike up another 200m to the Refugio Whymper. It’s possible to stay at the refugios. The bikes can be left at the refugios. Ask the housekeeper. There are cooking facilities and water, but only snacks are sold. The way downhill is very nice and you can follow the next tour to Salinas.
